WonderCon 2018 Cosplay recap.

WonderCon was held March 23-25, 2018 and it was another wonderful con. Thousands of cosplayer could be seen walking the halls and court yard of the Ananheim Convention Center.

WonderCon is an anual event usually held in the city of Anaheim. It is run by the same people that run San Diego Comic Con, but unlike San Diego it is far less stressful and one of my favorite cons. Also on the plus side you have Downtown Disney and the Disneyland Resort a short distance away.

This year was filed with thousands of amazing cosplays. It always amazes me the level of creativity.

I love cosplaying and I make all my own cosplays. I’ve been sewing for almost three years and I’m completely self taught.

Day 1-  80s and 90s animated classics.

For the first day I cosplayed as one of my favorite childhood characters Gadget Hackwrench from Disney’s Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers.

I ran into some other critters  during the day.

Loved Alivin and the Chipettes

Janet-The blonde Jedi

Secret of Nimh

Love how classic 80s and 90s cartoons were being represented.

It truly was a classic day that ended with a classic burger.  A mouse gets hungry after a busy day of Conning, so of course I went for an In n Out cheeseburger.

Day 2 – Herioc Adventures

For the second day I cosplayed as a USO girl. Honestly it is one of my favorites cosplays cause lets be honest I do love Captain America. He is one of my favorite superheroes

Bucky –  Steven Van Doom

Captain America – Captain Cosplay

Here are a few of my friends before the Con

Lando-  Atomic Redhead Pinup Wonder Woman, Griffindlr Quiddich players

Took some pictures with some Caps
Even joined some fellow USO girls for this group picture. All and all it was a fun day, but very exhausting.

Day 3 – Regency princesses

Day 3 my friend Jojoand I decided to do a regency Frozen mashup. Our love of Jane Austen inspired this idea and it was very well received.

Coronation Elsa and  Anna Austen

Tea Time with Hamilton. When the Colonies meet British Regency. Apparently they aren’t fans of tea 😂

Snowflake tea sandwiches

We ran into some other great cosplays during the day.

My favorite of princess suffragettes

Anna – Arielle cosplay

Ariel- Lena

Moana – Alia

Sleeping Beauty- Victoria

Loved this Brave family. Complete with peg leg. Such a clever cosplay

Sailor Moon –   Eri

Rita Skeeter Nikki interviews Queenie Jamie

We each bought our own charcters.

Corgi Link. Love it when dogs cosplay too

It was a great WonderCon and we ended it by heading to Disney

Best part of the end, no more wigs!!!

Took a spin on Luigi’s

I stopped to talk to Captain America who was honestly so wonderful. Even asked to see pics of WonderCon. Highly suggest stopping by and talking to him.

Finally ended the night with fireworks. It was perfection.

I highly recommend WonderCon and even more cosplaying. Hope this inspired you to check out a local Con. Have a magical day!!

The making of Art Nouveau Belle cosplay

I am a huge fan of Hannah Alexander art work, eapecially her art nouveau art work. I’ve always wanted to bring one of her works to life. It’s a big challenge to undertake making a pattern, dying fabric and hand beading ,but I was up to the challenge.

I decided on tackling the Art Nouveau Belle!
I bought 7 yards of poly blend satin and 7 yards of poly blend chiffon. I had two yards of yellow broadcloth already.

Now to figure how to make the dress. I found a pattern that worked well and would just need a little modifying.

I just had to modify the goudets, the insets between the seams that create a flowey almost mermaid like feel. Making them longer and wider to create a sillouet similar to the drawing.  Also I would need to make sleeves and add ruffles.

I constructed the skirt and cut out the pieces of the top. The top consists  of 5 layers of fabric. Two layers of cotton broad cloth, with interfacing In between,  satin and chiffon. The bodice will be boned. The boning channels will be between the cotton fabrics. I constructed the cotton section fist and left the piece of chiffon and satin as pieces to be dyed.

To dye the skirt, it is best to have the satin lining constructed and the chiffon top layer constructed.

Now to dye the fabric. When using poly blend you have to use dye formulated to work for that. Rit dye more  Daffodil yellow  is the dye I used for the project, regular Rit will not work. Also when dying polyester blends you have to use the stove top method. With ombré you have to dye the fabric in section. The fabric you want darkest has to stay in the dye longer. The fabric you want lightest remove from the pot first.  I dumped everything in the pot after 10 minutes I pulled a section out. After another 15 minutes I pulled another chunck of a section. I left the remainder in to soak for another 15 Minutes. Repeat the same process for the chiffon.  Also don’t use the pot for cooking after. This pot should only be used for dying and not for food.

Be sure to follow the bottle instruction.

Now that everything is dyed it’s time to sew everything together.

I made the belt pattern that was going to be embellished with embroidered beaded lace.

The sleeves I drafted a pattern myself and drafted the pattern for the ruffles on the bodice and the sleeves.

I hand sewed the belt to the dress. Machine sewing it could possibly damage the beading and the chiffon.

Now to work on the grommets. With cosplays I like to have stuff that laces up. I unfortunately  fluctuate in weight about 5 to 10 lbs so lacing is a must especially with cosplays that take such a long time and effort to create.

It’s a painful process and I have a hand held grommet press so elbow grease is a must.
Now to finish the beading. I bought these gold beads at Joann’s fabric. You have to hand sew them. Work in tiny sections so they don’t break apart easily.

The jeweled Rose was hand sewn to the center. I was so lucky to have found this piece.

For the top I divided the strands with two white pearl beads it added a nice touch.

Now to do the beading on the hip. This was the biggest pain and the beads would break. Work in small sections and knot often. My cat was in charge of quality control and inspection lol

The rhinestones on the godets were glued with E6000.

For the head piece I used fake roses, leaves, a wide head band, and a few fake pearls. I cut the heads, laid the leaves on the head band, glued, and hot glued the Rose heads to the leaves. I added a few pearls to the leaves.

Here is the dress completed. You can tell in the video how beautifully the ombre turned out.

I hope this inspires you to create your own Art nouveau princess. Thanks for reading!

D23 expo recap

D23 expo was this past weekend at the Anaheim convention center. It comes ever other year and it was my first time going.

I decided to go as Vanessa, Ursuala’s alter ego on land. The costume I made turned out great.

I got in line about 7 am the convention opened at 10 am.

The nice thing is that D23 expo had stage pass for some panels. It’s basically like a fast pass so you don’t have to wait in line for hours and hours. I was able to stag a pass for the shorts panel.

The short panel discussed the different shorts featured in the new DVD. The coolest thing was a sketch book they gave to all audience members.

Another cool thing about the expo was a chance to visit the Disneyland archives.  It featured props from rides, photos, badges, and costumes.  I took a ton of photos.

This was the end of the collection. Amazing!!!

There were tons of phot opportunities and amazing cosplays. I was lucky to take some photos with some amazing cosplayers.

Sven let’s go save Anna
My favorite had to be this one with Flynn Rider. Move Eric I have my eye on Flynn, Maximus doesn’t approve. Can’t help it Flynn stole my heart.
fellow cosplayers

I really was a fan of cosplayers that cosplayed less popular characters, Mr. and Mrs. Darling (Wendy’s parents) Olivia (Great Mouse Detective) King Steffan and the Queen (Aurora’s parents) and the Haunted Mansion (Amber Arden’s tightrope girl was amazing)

There was another great opportunity to take a photo on a Star Wars speed racer. It was pretty awesome.

I attended an artist signing of Jasmine Becket Griffith. I love her art work. Picket up a Snow White postcard.

Disney Infinity has a booth too. Uou had an opportunity to choose one of six figurines after their interactive experience. I was one of the last in line to get this opportunity, the line was two hours long but for a free infinity figure so worth it.

I picked up Sadness. She’s so cute.

Got to get a sneak peak of Disney Shanghai.

And another sneak peek of Pandora at Animal Kingdom

Plus there will be a lot of exciting with the announcement of Star Wars land in Disneyland and DisneyWorld. So much exciting new developments and expansions. It’s an amazing era for Disney. Can’t wait to see all the developments completed.

Plus all the cute products that will come out soon for Disney style at the Disney store.

It was an amazing day and I ended the day sailing back to the sea. After all Vanessa can’t remain on land forever.
I did buy a few things and scored some free stuff. I loved my Aristocats prints I bought and my Disney Vans. I loved the Ariel ones. Ironic that Vanessa bought Ariel shoes but it was the only way to get a little mermaid.

It was a fabulous day can’t wait for 2017. Thanks for reading, have a magical day.

I am a Bombshell – Bombshell Mera Cosplay

Well it’s that time a year where it’s one Comic Con after another. I had a great time at WonderCon last weekend as Mary Jane Watson, but one of my favorite cosplays I ever did was Bombshell Mera. If you aren’t familiar with it last year DC comics came out with several variant covers featuring their famous female heroines and villains as Bombshell beauties. The covers were done by Ant Lucia. He is absolutely amazing. I love his pin up art work. I bought a bunch of the variant comics as you can see.

Bombshell Mera by Ant Lucia is my favorite!

IMG_2803 Like I said I love these variants and there are a bunch more so be sure to check out Ant Lucia’s work. Now onto how to put together the cosplay. Making Bomshell Mera for the most part is pretty simple if your sewing skills aren’t that great. The only thing that is time consuming is the trident. I bought insulation foam and two wooden rods a very thin one that will be inserted into the trident and the thicker wooden rod. They are about less than an inch. To make the trident first make a pattern. I folded a piece of parchment in half and drew half the trident on one side and cut it out. This will give you a symmetrical trident, for the most part. Now trace the pattern onto a piece of foam and cut it out. I used this small jig saw like cutter. I wish I had a band saw, because that would have made cutting it out a lot easier. Now I made a huge mistake of directly spray painting the insulation foam with metallic paint. DO NOT DO THIS!!! It basically causes a chemical reaction and the insulation foam melts. I was horrified that all the work I had done had been for nothing and I had to start all over again. Once I had cut out a second trident I decided to paper mache it. I added several layers and let it dry. Then to give it a smoother finish I used plaster of paris. Once the plaster dries be sure to sand it to create a smoother finish. I started with a low grade 60 sand paper and finished off with a 150. To attach the trident to the wooden handle use a drill bit to create a hole wide enough so that the smaller wooden rod can slip in. This took some elbow work to a make it big and deep enough. Once it’s in add some gorilla glue or super glue. Now time to spray paint. I used a metallic gold spray paint. Make nice short strokes and thin coats. Let dry. If I ever do the trident over I will probably use worbla instead. It’s expensive, but the final product is a lot smoother. IMG_2953 IMG_2954 IMG_2977 IMG_2978 IMG_2979  IMG_3039 IMG_3049 IMG_3055 IMG_3056 Now for the pieces of the costume. I found my hat and jewelry at Wal-Mart. The bracelets and anchor necklace were actually silver, but I spray painted them gold. Never be scarred to paint something, paint is a cosplayers best friend. As for the shoes I couldn’t find green wedges, so I bought white ones and painted them with Martha Stewart paint in ironically the color seaweed. I then tied a matching ribbon around the slingback part to create the ankle strap. IMG_2980 IMG_2984 For Mera’s seashell pin I used polymer clay and a seashell soap mold. It was perfect. Follow the directions on the package on baking time. Note: Be sure to use a pan that you do not use to cook food on as polymer clay releases chemicals that are toxic. I then hot glued a pin backing. IMG_2997 IMG_2998 The belt was created with a think vinyl ribbon. I cut an M using a stencil and hot glued it to the center. I added Velcro to the back of the ribbon and voila Mera’s belt. The bathing suit I bought at Modcloth It is so beautiful. The sarong was created by folding a piece of fabric into a triangle shape and sewing around the edges. I did want a bit more coverage. There you have it my Bombshell Mera cosplay. It’s great especially if your sewing skills are very basic. IMG_3736IMG_3729IMG_3737 Here are some pictures at the last Cons I wore this.

Hope this gives you some ideas on creating a cosplay or you found a new artist’s work to admire. Which are some of your favorite comic book artists? Which Comic Cons are your favorite?

A Shiny Costume (My Kaylee Cosplay)

I absolutely love Firefly, it was the best show that ended to soon. Kaylee of course was my favorite character, she is dorky, awkward, and pretty handy. So of course I could relate to her! I decided to cosplay as my favorite character from one of the greatest show.

First I needed to find the army green coveralls. It wasn’t easy to find, all the cover lls had metal front zipper on the breast pockets, so I decided to buy white ones and dye them. You’ll find that cosplayers use what they have and make them into what they need. A little bit of fabric dye will fix it. I found some mens coveralls in a military supply store.

IMG_4015

I bought three bottles of RIT dye dark green, golden yellow, and dark brown. You’ll need all three to mix and create the army green color for Kaylee’s coveralls. I used the formal for Rit’s moss green. I used the bucket method rather than dying in the washing machine. Just follow the instructions on the site and on the bottle. I let my soak in the dye for about 45 minutes. The zipper didn’t dye so I used army green fabric paint and painted it green,

IMG_3106

In the end it turned out pretty well!

IMG_3120

Now for some alterations and sewing on the patches! I hemmed the pants and cut the sleeves off. Then I sewed the patches. I got the teddy bear patch at the Browncoats society booth at WonderCon. The heart and flower patch I got at JoAnn’s fabric store. The teddy bear and flower patches go on the left side and the heart patch on the right side,  just for proper reference.

IMG_4008

The shirt I found at Sears and dyed pink using Rit’s petal pink. I honestly never shop at Sears, but my mom was in there looking for some towels so I thought I would browse around in case I could find a floral shirt and I did. Here is the final product.

Had great time at Comikaze and even found some of the rest of the crew of Serenity! Hope this inspires you to create your own Shiny cosplay.

Happy St. Paddy’s day!

Happy St. Paddy’s day! Had a great run this morning and definitely will be posting more race costumes in the near future, including a Tink and Wendy race costume… in case anyone is running Tinkerbell and would like some ideas. I also will be writing a posting on two cosplays I worked on for Comikaze last year. I wore Poison Ivy (made by a friend), Kaylee (firefly), and Bombshell Mera. They are all green so thought I would share it on this day of green.

IMG_4321 Hope you keep an eye out for those future posts. Until then have a safe and fun Saint Patrick’s day 🍀💚

Avengers Assemble to run!

For the innagural Avengers Half marathon last year I decided to run as Captain America. I had a blue running tank from Forever 21 and a blue sparkle skirt from Sparkle Athletics. All I needed to do was make a red and white waist cincher and sew on a white star.

I cut out a star using a star template and sewed it on by hand, trying to use an embroidery looking stitch.

As for the waist cincher, I didn’t have a pattern so I basically cut out long strips of white and red fabric. I cut out 5 pieces of white fabric and 4 pieces of red. Each piece was about 8.5 inches long and 5 inches wide. Now the bad thing was that I didn’t cut the pieces at an angle to create a waist definition. I had to improvise by cutting the last two end pieces at an angle to create the waist definition. I highly recommend if you are going to create a waist cincher use a pattern as a guide. I used velcro and sewed two snaps on the cincher, it was the easiest thing to do when you’re a beginner sewer.

Here is the final look. The bow I got at a geek craft fair, I unfortunately can not remember the vendor. Any red, white, and blue ribbons will work or you can use a Captain America helmet.

During the race! Black Widow and I, two tough red heads!

The race was great. Lots of characters were out from Thor,  Hawkeye, Captain America, and Black Widow. The only down side of the race it was so windy, all the mile markers were being blown down and at one point I was running with my eyes closed on a dusty trail. I honestly wish I had decided to run with Captain’s shield, that  would have been very helpful against the blustery winds. All in all though I had a great time.  The medal was absolutely gorgeous and I was thrilled to add it to my collection. I look forward to running it again this year!
